Every Zonta year brings service opportunities.
On December 12, 2009 we wrapped packages at the Colonial Park Mall to support Shalom House.
On January 23, 2010 we worked at Brethren Housing Association, cleaning and painting one of their apartments. The apartment will be used as either transitional housing or low-income housing for homeless women and their children.
If you want to learn more about what Zonta is all about, join us on our work days to meet us and directly share in our mission. Please send an email to handsonservice@zonta-harrisburghershey.org for additional information about our upcoming projects!
During our program year spanning 2008 and 2009, we had a number of hand's on Service Projects:
Bethesda Mission Project: The club continued a project that began in the previous program year. The project involved “refurbishing” the Missions Annex building to make it available to shelter tenants. On several different dates during the year the club cleaned and organized 3 bedrooms, supplied and hung curtains, painted and cleaned other rooms in the Annex. We also sorted and boxed all the various items donated to the shelter over the Holiday season. At our December Meeting we invited the Directors of Bethesda Mission to enjoy our Holiday Dinner Meeting. During the evening festivities we presented the Mission with bags of requested supplies for the Mission to meet special needs throughout the Holiday Season.
Reindeer Food Project: Each year the Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland and Perry Counties sell “reindeer food” (bags filled with birdseed) as a Holiday Fundraiser. During our October business meeting the club made over 500 bags for DVSCP to use in their fund raising efforts.
Shalom House: During the Holiday Season this local shelter raises funds by Wrapping Gifts at a local mall. This year our club supported this group by providing assistance at the wrapping station.
International Women's Day. 80 yellow roses, the symbol of Zonta International, were delivered to women at shelters in 8 different locations throughout the Harrisburg area.
Randi’s Race: One club member served on the Race Committee and other club members participated the day of the event. This local walk/run, organized by DVSCP, was held in memory of Randi Trimble, who was killed by her husband several years ago. The race raises awareness of the issues of domestic violence. The race raised over $38,000 dollars that will support services to hundreds of women and children in our local area.
Fly-In: Children with disabilities and terminal illnesses are invited
to become Young Eagles at this annual event. Members of the Zonta Club
of Harrisburg-Hershey work side-by-side with many other community
volunteers to give kids and families a memorable day.
